How Long Will It Take Me To Find My Next Role?

What people want to hear is that the market is buoyant and they will secure a great role in no time at all. Having an active market is a bonus but I always tell my senior HR contacts the same thing, “You must be prepared to wait 12 months for the ideal role”.

This is quite unpopular especially with candidates who are looking to make an immediate move. The truth is that I cannot see the future so I cannot say how long it will take you to find your next role, but there is a very important reason why I say this.

Let me explain.

Firstly, this creates a psychological shift and re-sets expectations. You don’t want to be too hasty and make a bad decision, do you? Of course, you could take the next available role offered to you and then end up back on the market just a few months later.

Before you even think about applying for roles or contacting a recruiter you need to reflect on your experiences:

  • what did you like and dislike about your previous role?

  • Which of your previous employers was the best culture fit for you and why?

  • Who was the best manager you worked with and what characteristics did they have?

You must carry out deep analysis and then create a picture of what your ideal role looks like. Don’t overlook the basics, such as how far you are willing to commute daily.

What Requirements Are Absolutely Non-negotiable?

I ask this question to everyone that I deal with. What are the 3 most important things to you? It’s surprising how many people aren’t sure of their own answers.

You need to understand what your ideal role is and then work from there. Of course, it will be more challenging to find a role that ticks every box, but you must understand what that is and then decide which requirements are negotiable. You should have a clear vision of what your A, B, and C job looks like.

What are the 3 MOST IMPORTANT THINGS to you?

The important thing here is, to be honest with yourself, what is important to you? Do you want to climb the ladder with a dynamic fast-paced employer or do you simply want a role closer to home, in a pleasant environment? No two people are the same so don’t be influenced by what other people want. It’s your career and it's your life.

So, how long will it take you to find your next role?

Who knows, but making sure it’s the right role is the most important thing.
